Carved box, red oak & white pine, MARCH 2026
This box is based on 17th-century furniture that I study, but is not a strict copy of any particular box. The lid’s wooden pintle hinges come from one group, the pegged-and-glued rabbet joints from another, etc. The carvings both stem from studies of coastal Connecticut work, probably Guilford. All the oak is riven from a log, hewn and planed. A lidded till inside the box creates a small separate storage space as well as means for holding open the box lid.

Walnut Strapwork Carved Box
This box is another in a series I’ve been developing for several years. The carved patterns are derived from works done in Devon, England. My boxes in this style began with carved fronts and sides. Then some friends from England showed me photos of an Exeter box with the strapwork pattern carved on the lid as well. So I made many boxes with various carved lids, then saw some detailed photos of the Exeter box and saw it had mitered dovetails instead of rabbets. So I’ve made a few now with the whole show - carved lids, mitered dovetail corners and base moldings. This one goes one step further and has carved till parts too. A turned oval “boss” mounted on the center of the carved lid is the finishing touch.
It’s made from black walnut - with a white pine bottom. Handmade iron hinges by a blacksmith friend.

White Oak Strapwork Carved Box
I got two fabulous quartersawn white oak boards from a friend of mine. Wanted to do something really special with them - and after careful measuring came up with enough material to make the largest carved box of my career. I’ve made over 150 carved boxes - I like almost all of them. But this one is THE carved box.
Its inspiration is the same as the walnut box above - Exeter, Devon work from the 17th century. Mitered dovetails, strapwork carving front, sides and lid. Base molding. White pine bottom. Handmade hinges and nails. Lidded till inside.
